Description: Spartan is a heavy-cropping, very popular dessert apple of McIntosh type. Fruit is maroon, sweet, juicy and crisp with a white flesh. At best, perfumed with flavour like a cross between strawberry and melon; often described as vinous. An apple that ripens quite late in the season, usually in early October but needs to be well coloured before picked for its best flavour. Grown commercially in Canada and the UK. A very good pollinator for other varieties.
History: Raised by R.C. Palmer at the Dominion Experiment Station, Summerland, British Columbia, Canada n 1926. First fruited in 1932; introduced in 1936.
