Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla ‘Gerda’
Description: An upright, deciduous shrub or small tree with burgundy-black, pinnate leaves. Sweet, lemon scented blooms are carried in dense panicles in early summer, followed by glossy black elderberries that are loved by birds.
History: Raised at Horticultural Research International, East Malling, Kent. Received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.
Sambucus Growing Tips: Grow in moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soils, also thrives on extremely chalky sites. Tolerates shade, but colours best in sun. Fruit and flowers may be used for flavouring, wine and cooking.
