Description: Red Foxwhelp is a cider apple that at one time was unsurpassed. It is quite special, firstly for a high specific gravity and therefore high alcoholic content (11%) and secondly for its pretty pink coloured juice, making a fine ‘Cyder’ in all respects.  Fruit is medium-sized, striped red with a mild bittersweet flavour. Juices well! Must be collected of the ground as soon as possible to avoid rot.

History: Arose from a pip collected and grown by Charles I’s Ambassador to France, Lord Scudamore in the 17th Century in Herefordshire, UK. Grown on a large commercial scale during the 18th Century but lost popularity by the 19th Century. In its day it was often preferred to imported wines and poetry and song were often enlisted in its praises. Formerly referred to as ‘Herefordshire Redstreak’ in previous information but through DNA investigation 2016 now correctly named.
