Description: Prunus ‘Spire’ is a small deciduous tree with a compact, upright habit, young bronze leaves, later green, then autumn colours of red and gold. Single light pink flowers open from dark pink buds from early April.
History: A hybrid from Prunus sargentii and possibly Prunus yedoensis, raised at Hillier nurseries in early 1920s. Received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.
Prunus (Flowering Cherry) Growing Tips: ‘Spire’ is best grown in well-drained soil, in full sun to achieve the best flower display and autumn colour. Will tolerate most soil types including chalk and clay.
