Wild Cherry/Gean/Mazzard
Description:Â One of the most attractive of our native woodland trees. A medium-large tree with smooth, grey bark, turning mahogany-red, peeling and deeply fissured with age. The white cup shaped flowers are borne in clusters with the leaves in late April.
It is the parent of most fruiting sweet cherries and in some years will produce a good crop of fruit itself. They have less flesh and are bitterer than the cultivated species, but have the same dark red colour from July and will be quickly stripped from the tree by birds.
Prunus Growing Tips: Best grown in well-drained soil, in full sun to achieve the best autumn colour. Will tolerate most soil types including chalk, and clay.
