Full Description

Description: Large shrub or small tree of wide spreading habit, and grey flaking bark, especially decorative in mature trees. Large, deep green, oval leaves turn crimson/gold in autumn. Small delicate crimson flowers in late winter/early spring, followed by spiky brown fruits.

History: Named after the German naturalist Friedrich Parrot. An introduction by Fliegner and Simmons from Elburz Mountains of N. Iran in 1977. Received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.

Parrotia Growing Tips: Grow in a well-drained or moist but well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Tolerant of most soils, including chalk.
