Description: A handsome tree with oval, glossy green leaves which are dark green above and blue green underneath, turning rich scarlet, orange and yellow colours in autumn. It has a columnar habit and will tolerate semi-shade. Several known forms such as Nyssa sylvatica ‘Sheffield’ are worth planting.
History: Introduced to the Netherlands from eastern North America approximately 1747 and added to many European gardens over the following centuries.
Nyssa Growing Tips: Best grown in moist, humus-rich, fertile soils with shelter from cold, dry winds.
