Disease-resistant
Description: Newton Wonder is a well known, late keeping cooking apple. The fruit is large and bright scarlet, striped and light russet dots. Creamy white flesh, tinged green and rather coarse-textured. Nutty, sweet and aromatic; a strong flavour when well-ripened. Cooks to a juicy, mild purée and makes a fruity eating apple later in the season. Excellent ingredient in salads, stuffing and mincemeat. Very successful at market, in farm and home orchards.
History: Found growing in the thatch of the Hardings Arms, at King’s Newton, Melbourne, Derbyshire, England. Raised by Taylor and introduced by Pearsons of Nottingham in 1887. That same year it received First Class Certificate from Royal Horticultural Society.
