Full Description

Description: A vigorous upright tree when young with bright green young leaves. Attractive white ‘apple blossom’ flowers, opening from pink buds in spring, and large bright orange and red pear-shaped fruits in the autumn. One of the most popular for crab apple jelly.

History: Raised in 1875. Named by E. Holmes to honour his friend John Downie a Scottish nurseryman and partner in the Handsworth Nurseries, Whittington, England.

Malus Growing Tips: Crab Apples are self-fertile, and very useful as pollinators for a variety of fruit trees. Full sun or part shade lover, best grown in fertile, moist, deep, loamy soils. Requires minimal pruning in late winter or spring to remove damaged, diseased or misplaced growth.
