M. ioensis x M. xpurpurea
Syn: Malus Rubra’
Description: A most spectacular purple leaved form of the ‘Prairie Crab’ with large lobed dark purple leaves that turn a stunning orange-red in autumn. Buds are deep rose red opening to single rose-red to deep rose-red flowers. The fruitlets are of variable colours – green, yellow, red.
History: A hybrid selected by Arie den Boer from a large number of seedlings of M. ioensis at Waterworks Arboretum, Des Moines, IA. Named in 1953 by the introducer for his daughter-in-law.
Malus Growing Tips: Crab Apples are self-fertile, and very useful as pollinators for a variety of fruit trees. Full sun or part shade lover, best grown in fertile, moist, deep, loamy soils. Requires minimal pruning in late winter or spring to remove damaged, diseased or misplaced growth.
Height and Spread (after 10 years): 4m x 3m
