Magnolia denudata
Description: Magnolia denudata ‘Swarthmore Sentinel’ is a narrow tree of upright habit that can reach 20m by 5m. Bears cream to ivory white flowers, upright and goblet shaped when borne but open as it ages. Fragrant with a tinge of pink or purple at the base.
History: Introduced by Scott Arboretum in 2009, from a seedling received from J.C Raulston in 1993, which he obtained from Beijing Botanical Garden.
Magnolia Growing Tips: Full sun to part shade lover, best grown in consistently moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soils. Provide sheltered site as buds and flowers may be damaged by cold winds, and late frosts. Shape and size can be controlled by pruning which should be done either immediately after flowering or during late summer.
