Description: Magnolia ‘Spectrum’ is a small to medium sized tree, originally upright, but develops a broad, pyramidal outline as it matures. The flowers are deep reddish pink on the outside, creamy white within and have an erect poise. A good alternative to Magnolia ‘Black Tulip’.
Parentage: M. liliiflora ‘Nigra’ x M. sprengeri var. sprengeri ‘Diva’
History: Raised by William Kosar at the U.S National Arboretum in 1963. Received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit in 2012.
Magnolia Growing Tips: Full sun to part shade lover, best grown in consistently moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soils. Provide sheltered site as buds and flowers may be damaged by cold winds, and late frosts. Shape and size can be controlled by pruning which should be done either immediately after flowering or during late summer.
Height and Spread (after 10 years): 4m x 3m
