Description: Magnolia ‘Lois’ is a large, deciduous shrub or tree of conical habit which flowers profusely as it matures. Sulphur yellow, upright, goblet shaped flowers appear mid-April and have a slight fragrance.
Parentage: M.acuminata x (M. acuminate x M. denudata)
History: An introduction from Brooklyn Botanic Garden named in honour of former chairman of the board of directors Lois Carswell. Received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit in 2012.
Magnolia Growing Tips: Full sun to part shade lover, best grown in consistently moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soils. Provide sheltered site as buds and flowers may be damaged by cold winds, and late frosts. Shape and size can be controlled by pruning which should be done either immediately after flowering or during late summer.
