Full Description

Description: A small to medium conical tree, with an upright habit when grown in the open. Slightly fragrant, pale primrose yellow blooms are upward facing with long tapering buds. Flowers open up as they mature revealing red stammens. These appear just before the new copper-bronze foliage emerges, the large glossy oval leaves mature to dark green, before turning golden yellow in autumn.

History: M. acuminate x M. denudata. Introduced to Britain in the 1980’s, the cross was carried out in 1956 by Evamaria Sperber at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in the United States. Named in 1978 in honour of Elizabeth van Brunt, a patron of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit in 1993.

Magnolia Growing Tips: Full sun to part shade lover, best grown in consistently moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soils. Provide sheltered site as buds and flowers may be damaged by cold winds, and late frosts. Shape and size can be controlled by pruning which should be done either immediately after flowering or during late summer.
