Full Description

Description: Magnolia ‘Daybreak’ grows into a small to medium sized tree of a broad pyramidal outline with a twiggy network of branches and distinctive fissured bark. The fragrant flowers have eight rose-pink tepals that splay out to 23-25cm and appear from an early age. In bud they emerge with a slight green cast and then open to a suffusion of rose and pink. Darker on the outside of the tepals and lighter on the inside.

Parentage: M. brooklynensis ‘Woodsman’ x M. ‘Tina Durio’

History: Bred by August Kehr and registered in 1991. Received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit in 2012.

Magnolia Growing Tips: Full sun to part shade lover, best grown in consistently moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soils. Provide sheltered site as buds and flowers may be damaged by cold winds, and late frosts. Shape and size can be controlled by pruning which should be done either immediately after flowering or during late summer.
