Description: Magnolia ‘Cleopatra’ is an upright small tree with a columnar to pyramidal habit, that blooms freely from an early age. The deciduous leaves are fresh green, ovate densely cover the whole plant when in leaf. Attractive red-purple flowers that display an almost metallic sheen are produced in abundance in spring. This variety is small enough that it makes an ideal magnolia for a garden with limited space.
Parentage: M. soulangeana ‘Sweet Simplicity’ x M. ‘Black Tulip’
History: New Zealand Hybrid bred by Vance Hooper in 1998.
Magnolia ‘Cleopatra’ Growing Tips: Full sun to part shade lover, best grown in consistently moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soils. Provide sheltered site as buds and flowers may be damaged by cold winds, and late frosts. Shape and size can be controlled by pruning which should be done either immediately after flowering or during late summer.
Height and Spread (after 10 years): 4m x 2m
