M. ‘Vulcan’ x M. ‘Iolanthe’
Description: This vigorous, open-branched deciduous magnolia is ideal as a specimen tree in smaller gardens. Deep burgundy-purple, tulip-like flowers that grow up to 15cm in diameter, crowd the slender stems before the green, ovate leaves emerge each spring. With cool temperatures and ample moisture it can experience some re-bloom in mid-summer.
History: Raised by Mark Jury in New Zealand and released in 1998.
Magnolia Growing Tips: Full sun to part shade lover, best grown in consistently moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soils. Provide sheltered site as buds and flowers may be damaged by cold winds, and late frosts. Shape and size can be controlled by pruning which should be done either immediately after flowering or during late summer.
Height and Spread (after 10 years): 3m x 2m
