Description: Magnolia ‘Black Beauty’ is relatively slow growing, becoming broadly conical in habit with maturity. This free flowering variety produces a superb display upon bare branches from mid-spring, followed by mid-green, ovate foliage. The tulip-shaped blooms are a sumptuous dark purple, almost black, opening to reveal a contrasting creamy white interior.
History: Magnolia x brooklynensis. New introduction from the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens breeding program. Cross between Magnolia acuminata and M. liliiflora.
Magnolia Growing Tips: Full sun to part shade lover, best grown in consistently moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soils. Provide sheltered site as buds and flowers may be damaged by cold winds, and late frosts. Shape and size can be controlled by pruning which should be done either immediately after flowering or during late summer.
Height and Spread (after 10 years): 4m x 3m
