Description: Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Lane Roberts’ is a medium sized tree with a broad, pyramidal, fairly open crown. Large, star shaped, lobed foliage is glossy green in spring and summer, before turning brilliant shades of red and purple in the autumn. It does produce insignificant flowers followed by burr like fruit clusters. The wood exudes a sweet smelling resin when pierced, giving the tree its common name.
History: In the 1960’s, Dr Lane Roberts bought a Liquidambar seedling from Hillier Nurseries. In the late 1960’s, Roberts called Harold Hiller to say that his tree had a splendid autumn colour. Hiller requested propagation material, named the tree after his customer and introduced the cultivar in 1971. Received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.
Liquidambar Growing Tips: Liquidambar should be planted in full sun to achieve their best colour, in neutral to acid soil that is moist but well-drained. Once the trees mature, they tolerate occasional drought as well as periodic flooding. Protect from frost when young.
Height and Spread (after 10 years): 6m x 3m
