Description: Lara, also known as Juglans makes a magnificent feature for the larger garden. A more compact growing variety which is a potentially good cropper producing large, thin shelled nuts of excellent quality and a unique creamy flavour. Nuts are rough-textured shell but good shell seal. They can be harvested green and pickled or left until fully ripe in the autumn to be dried out and stored. Walnut ‘Lara’® is propagated onto ‘Juglans regia’ rootstock. This variety may be slow to establish but will begin to produce nuts after about four years.

Walnut Growing Tips: Prefer to be planted in full sun or light shade with a sheltered position with no frost pockets. Will tolerate many soil types but are happier in light, sandy, well-drained soils. Walnuts are difficult to establish in the first year of planting and some die-back in the shoot tips is expected. For pickling, the nuts are best picked in July before the shells are formed. Test with a pin or skewer! Rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids.
