Description: Juglans regia, also known as the Common Walnut or Persian Walnut is a medium sized, broad crowned deciduous tree. Leaves appear in late spring as orangey brown shoots that turn a fresh green before maturing into textured sturdy foliage that falls with the frost. Its bark is smooth, which sets Common Walnut apart from the Black Walnut that has a textured, broken bark from an early age. Yellow-green male and female catkins in late spring. Smooth husks enclose edible creamy white nuts although it takes some years to fruit.Â
History: Juglans regia is native to South Eastern Europe, from the Carpathian Mountains through the Middle East and into the Himalayas. The date of its introductions isn’t known as it has existed in Britain for many centuries. Received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.
Juglans Growing Tips: The walnut family like deep, well drained soil and full sun or partial shade.
Height and Spread (after 20 years): 8m x 7m
