Description: Despite its name, ‘Golden King’ is in fact a female holly that makes a compact, conical, evergreen shrub, and bears broad, ovate, slightly spiny leaves that are dark green and margined yellow. Produces small white flowers followed by pretty red berries in the autumn/winter, although the crop will be more abundant with a male nearby.
History: Ilex ‘Golden King’ is a sport from Ilex x altaclarensis Hendersonii which occurred at Lawson nursery in Scotland shortly before 1876. Received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.
Ilex Growing Tips: Thrive in almost any well drained soil, in shade or sun. Most are tolerant of urban pollution and coastal conditions.
Height and Spread (after 10 years): 3m x 2m
