Description: Ilex aquifolium, also known as Common Holly is a slow growing shrub or small tree, rarely exceeding 10m, although in few circumstances has been known to reach 20m. White flowers appear in May and berries emerge on female plants around November, ripening red and providing a good source of food for birds. A versatile evergreen, multi-purpose tree for screens, hedges and as a specimen.Â

History: One of Britain’s few native evergreen trees. Received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.
Ilex Growing Tips: Most are tolerant of urban pollution and coastal conditions. Able to adapt to different conditions, will grow on almost any well drained soil, and is extremely tolerant of shady conditions.
Height and Spread (after 10 years): up to 4m x 2m.
