Description: Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Arnold Promise’, commonly known as Witch Hazel, is a large deciduous shrub of open habit. Spidery, yellow flowers are extremely frost-resistant and highly fragrant, and appear from mid-late winter. After the flowers, large green leaves open that turn vibrant shades of yellow and orange in the autumn. This is a lovely shrub for the woodland garden or as a specimen in the shrub border.
History: Raised at the Arnold Arboretum, Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts in 1928. Received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.
Hamamelis Growing Tips: This small tree will thrive in any reasonable soil, but prefering neutral to acid conditions. Shelter from cold winds.
