Description: Granny Smith is a well known supermarket variety which is very successful within the commercial orchards. It’s grown extensively in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa where the climate is most suitable. This good keeper needs a long hot summer to perform well. Bright greenish-yellow with smooth, greasy skin and greenish-white, juicy flesh which is refreshing but with no strong taste. Ideal for those who like firm, crisp apples.
History: Raised from chance seed thrown out by Mrs Thomas Smith, Ryde, New South Wales, Australia. Seeds were thought to have been from French Crab open-pollinated and starting fruiting in 1968.
