Description: The ‘Dawyck Purple’ beech tree has a stunning columnar shape and is suitable for a smaller garden due to its upright habit. This tree also looks good in larger gardens, particularly when planted with the golden leaved form ‘Dawyck Gold’. ‘Dawyck Purple’ will enchant you with changing foliage throughout the year. In spring, the leaves emerge a radiant burgundy red colour, eventually becoming a deep, dark purple. When the weather turns frosty, the foliage takes on amber tones before dropping to reveal the smooth, grey, muscly bark that Beeches are famous for.

History: In 1969 Director of the Trompenburg Arboretum in the Netherlands, Dick van Hoey Smith, collected Beech nuts from a green-leaved columnar Beech called Dawyck. Out of the one hundred seedlings that he grew, four had purple leaves, and one of these he named Dawyck Purple. Received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.

Fagus Growing Tips: They will grow in most soils provided they are not waterlogged, and will tolerate most sites except coastal. They prefer full sun or partial shade.
