Full Description

Description: A dense, fastigiate, small deciduous tree with smooth grey bark. Throughout the summer the startling, bright leaves turn slowly to mid-green and then bronze and yellow in the autumn. The Golden Fastigiate, as it is more commonly known, is an ideal variety for brightening up a dark corner. Will grow well in chalk, but avoid wet and/or heavy clay soils. For better colour grow in partial shade. Prune late winter early spring if needed. Contrasts well when planted in conjunction with Fagus sylvatica ‘Dawyck Purple.

History: A seedling of ‘Dawyck’ raised in 1969 by J.R.P van Hoey-Smith at the Trompenburg Arboretum, Holland. Received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.

Fagus Growing Tips: They will grow in most soils provided they are not waterlogged, and will tolerate most sites except coastal. They prefer full sun or partial shade.
