Description: Cryptomeria japonica ‘Elegans’ has a bushy habit with surprisingly soft and tactile foliage, coloured blue/green in the spring, then turns fresh green throughout the summer, before burgundy-purple and rusty-red in the autumn and winter. Its colour changes throughout the year make for unique year-round interest in the landscape.
History: Cryptomeria ‘Elegans’ originated in Japan in the mid-1800s where it is known by the name ‘Yawara.’ In 1854, English plant collector, Thomas Lobb imported the first plants to the Veitch Nursery, Chelsea and Exeter, United Kingdom. Nelson named the plant in 1866.
Cryptomeria (Japanese Cedar) Growing Tips: Thrives in any deep, moist but well-drained soil, in dappled sun or part shade.
Height and Spread (after 10 years): 3m x 1.5m
