Full Description

Description: Small, shrubby, deciduous tree forms a spreading canopy of shallowly lobed rich green leaves. White flowers can completely cover the tree in spring, they are double and develop a faint pink flush just before they fall. ‘Plena’ is sterile and therefore produces no fruit, and as with most forms of the species, the branches are protected by short thorns.

History: Cultivated since the end of the 18th century and apparently a single clone. Put into commerce by Späth in 1911. Received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.

Crataegus Growing Tips: Will tolerate a wide range of soils as long as they are well-drained, urban pollution and coastal conditions. Extremley hardy and ideal for the smaller garden. Prefer full sun or partial shade.
