Description: Chandler is a relatively small tree which produces large nuts with a thin shell and very light-coloured kernels. A late leafing and blooming variety so less likely to be affected by frost. Partially self fertile. 

History: Developed by the University of California in 1979.

Walnut Growing Tips: Prefer to be planted in full sun or light shade with a sheltered position with no frost pockets. Will tolerate many soil types but are happier in light, sandy, well-drained soils. Walnuts are difficult to establish in the first year of planting and some die-back in the shoot tips is expected. For pickling, the nuts are best picked in July before the shells are formed. Test with a pin or skewer! Rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids.

Chandler is self-fertile but will produce higher yields with a polliniser, preferably Franquette.
