Description: Cercis chinensis ‘Diane’ is a specially selected form of chinensis. The variety has more vigour than Avondale but with a more tidy shape. An ideal choice for a very small garden tree and can be grown in a large container for several years and, if pruned after flowering, will maintain a bushy and attractive rounded shape. Flowering well in this climate, it produces rich purple-pink flowers which are darker than that of Avondale, on bare stems in late April-May. Rich green, glossy heart shaped foliage emerges tinted red-purple when they unfurl. The foliage turns shades of buttery yellow in the autumn for added interest.
History: Selected by Nurseryman and Plant Breeder Chris Lane and named after his wife Diane.
Cercis Growing Tips: Performs best in moderately fertile well drained soils. The best flower production occurs in full sun but part shade is best in hot summer climates.
Height and Spread (after 10 years): 3m x 2m
