Description: Cercidiphyllum japonicum, also known as the Katsura Tree is an elegant medium sized deciduous tree, with paired, broadly heart-shaped leaves to 10cm in length, bronze tinted when young, and turning yellow, orange and pink in autumn, when they smell of burnt sugar. Tiny red flowers decorate the naked branches in spring. Makes a superb multi-stemmed specimen tree for a small garden or woodland area.
History:Â Introduced in 1881 and received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit
Cercidiphyllum Growing Tips: Moist but well drained, acidic soils. Will tolerate some lime but will grow better and produce more vivid autumn colour in acid soil. Very hardy but vulnerable to late spring frosts as a young plant. Grows best in an area sheltered from strong winds.
Height and Spread (after 20 years): 6m x 4m
