Description: Cedrus libani also known as Cedar of Lebanon, is a large, wide spreading tree, slower growing than C. atlantica and also conical when young, gradually assuming the familiar, picturesque, flat topped and tiered arrangement of a mature tree. The leaves are green or greyish green. Barrel shaped cones are purple-green then brown. This interesting tree has innumerable scriptural and historical associations.
History: Native to the Near East, best known from its historic stands in the Lebanon. Introduced in 1645 and received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. The finest tree recorded by Elwes and Henry grew at Pains Hill near Cobham and measured 35m high with a girth of 8m.
Cedrus (Cedar) Growing Tips:Â Performs best in full sun in medium moisture, well-drained soils. Tolerant of hot and humid summers. Drought tolerant once established.
