Full Description

Description: Carpinus betulus, also known as Common Hornbeam is a medium sized, native tree which can be planted as a tree or within a hedge. They have a grey fluted trunk with ovate and serrated, ribbed leaves turning yellow in autumn and later turning brown. Green catkins open in late spring followed by clusters of winged nuts in the autumn. This particular variety is very good for pleaching.

History: Originated in Europe and Asia Minor. Recieved an Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.

Carpinus (Hornbeam) Growing Tips: Suitable grown in heavy, wet or chalky soils. Prefer to be planted in a full sun or partial shade position.
