Description: Betula pendula ‘Tristis’ is a tall, graceful tree with pendulous twisting shoots at the end of the weeping branches. The white bark, as with many birch, develops characteristic black fissures with age. The catkins appear during the spring amongst the slightly serrated foliage which turns creamy yellow in the autumn. A special tree for its unusual weeping appearance.
History: Introduced in 1867. Received an Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.
Betula Growing Tips: They will succeed on most soils with certain species happy even in wet sites. Although tolerant of chalk soils they will not reach a maximum size in these conditions. Best planted in a full sun position.
