Description: Betula papyrifera ‘Saint George’ is a form of birch with white and pale tan bark, contrasting with the dark brown of the branches. Leaves are smooth and relatively small, on warty shoots and dark green in colour. Turn stunning shades of yellow during the autumn before leaf fall.
History: Selected by nurseryman Kevin Croucher from the plants raised from seed collected by Kenneth Ashburner in St Johns, Newfoundland, Canada.
Betula Growing Tips: They will succeed on most soils with certain species happy even in wet sites. Although tolerant of chalk soils they will not reach a maximum size in these conditions. Best planted in a full sun position.
