Description: Betula ‘Fascination’, also known as Chinese Red Barked Birch is a worthy selection of pyramidal habit. Attractive deep orange, satin peeling bark revealing layers of variable colour underneath which turns to a pale salmon white. The exceptionally long brown catkins provide much added interest in the spring alongside the emerging glossy green leaves that provide excellent yellow autumn colour.
History: Originally sent from the Netherlands wrongly labelled as Betula caerulea-grandis. Noticed and named by Herman Oterdoom and Dick van Gelderen in the late 70’s and grown by Dick van Gelderen at his Planten Tuin Esveld Nursery, at Boskop, Netherlands.
Betula Growing Tips: They will succeed on most soils with certain species happy even in wet sites. Although tolerant of chalk soils they will not reach a maximum size in these conditions. Best planted in a full sun position.
Height and Spread (after 10 years) : 6m x 4m
