Description: Acer rubrum ‘Brandywine’ is probably one of the best Acer rubrum varieties for reliably intense autumn colour in the UK climate. Upright and oval in shape, ideal for restricted spaces. The leaves emerge pale yellow, darkening green in the summer and then turn into a brilliant, long-lasting red-purple which creates a spectacular display of autumn colours. Small flowers appear in the spring adding all year round interest.
History: Introduced by the US National Arboretum, Washington DC in 1994. Cross between ‘October Glory’ and ‘Autumn Flame’.
Acer Growing Tips: Very easy to grow in a wide range of well-drained soils. They thrive in sun but with partial shade to protect the leaves from scorch. A sheltered area away from strong winds is preferred.
Height and Spread (after 10 years) : 6m x 4m
