Description: Acer platanoides ‘Crimson King’ is a very popular, handsome Acer variety. It’s a round-headed, medium-sized fast growing tree. Lime green flowers tinged red appear in April followed by large intense purple foliage which turn bright orange-brown during the autumn. Other comparable purple-leaved forms are Acer ‘Goldsworth Purple’ and Acer ‘Royal Red’.
History: A seedling of ‘Schwedleri’ raised in Belgium in 1937. Received an Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.
Acer Growing Tips: Very easy to grow in a wide range of well-drained soils. They thrive in sun but with partial shade to protect the leaves from scorch. A sheltered area away from strong winds is preferred.
Height and Spread (after 10 years) : 6m x 4m
