Description: Acer palmatum ‘Sango kaku’, also known as Coral Bark Maple or Senkaki is one of the most invaluable and vibrant of small trees for winter effect. Small palmate, pale green leaves appear in the spring with a strong, red tinge which fades as the tree matures. As summer approaches, the foliage becomes a lighter shade of green followed by yellow-golden tones in the autumn. Bright coral-red stems emerge in the winter which looks especially striking in the snow. The name ‘Sango kaku’ translates to ‘Coral Tower’.
History: Introduced in 1882. Received an Award of Garden Merit from The Royal Horticultural Society in 1950.
Acer Growing Tips: Very easy to grow in a wide range of well-drained soils. They thrive in sun but with partial shade to protect the leaves from scorch. A sheltered area away from strong winds is preferred.
Height and Spread (after 10 years) : 3m x 2m
