Description: Acer griseum, also known as Paper Bark Maple is one of the most beautiful small, broadly columnar trees. The curly brown, flaking old bark on the trunk shows cinnamon coloured new bark beneath. The attractive three lobed yellowish green leaves turn into brilliant shades of red and scarlet before falling in the autumn. Small pale green-yellow flowers appear late in the spring. A classic border or lawn specimen. Can take several years to establish its impressive shape and attractive bark.
History: Developed in China and introduced by Ernest Wilson in 1901. Received an Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society in 1922.
Acer (Maple) Growing Tips: Very easy to grow in a wide range of well-drained soils. They thrive in sun but with partial shade to protect the leaves from scorch. A sheltered area away from strong winds is preferred.
