Description: Acer campestre, also known as The Field Maple is a round headed, medium-large sized tree with corky light brown stems, is good for hedges but undervalued as a specimen. Five lobed dark green leaves sometimes pinkish red at first turn a golden yellow russet, or even dark purple in autumn. A very hardy variety that’s commonly used as motorway plantings.
History: Received an Award of Garden Merit from The Royal Horticultural Society. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge used these trees to decorate Westminster Abbey when they got married.
Acer (Maple) Growing Tips: Grows on chalk and quite acid soil, also on waterlogged sites. They thrive in sun but with partial shade in an open spaced area. Prune hard in the winter to increase leaf size for a more dramatic effect.
Height and Spread (after 10 years): 6m x 4m
